Father’s Day was established in the United States in the 20th century as a complement to Mother’s Day. In some countries, it’s a public holiday, while in others they celebrate it in a different or unique way. In Germany, for example, older men and young adults have the tradition of going hiking in a trail pulling a wagon filled with wine or beer. Because of the alcoholic drinks shared in the occasion, teenage boys are not included in this celebration.
Throughout the world, Father’s Day is celebrated on different dates. In Brazil, we congratulate and thank our fathers on the second Sunday of August. In the United States and United Kingdom, this day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, and, as in Brazil, children make gifts for their fathers at school and they also buy gifts for them.
Because of the great demand for gifts this time of year, shops sell in large numbers and increase the number of promotions. In countries like the Netherlands, however, the restaurants increase the number of sales, since it is the tradition to have a family dinner at the grandfather’s house or at a restaurant, and having a big breakfast in bed made by the family.
But whether you are hiking in Germany, eating dinner with your family in the Netherlands, or choosing a gift to give to your dad here in Brazil, the US or the UK, let’s take some time to appreciate all the work our dads put in to take care of us and make us the people we are today.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in Spot On!
